The Ordinary keeps its formulas simple: each serum targets one main concern. Here is where most customers start:
- Niacinamide 10% + Zinc 1% – oily skin, visible pores and blemishes.
- Hyaluronic Acid 2% + B5 – dehydrated or tight-feeling skin. Suits every skin type.
- Alpha Arbutin 2% + HA – dark spots and uneven skin tone.
- Salicylic Acid 2% Solution – clogged pores and breakouts.
- Retinol 0.2% in Squalane – early signs of ageing. Start here before stronger retinols, and use it at night only.
- AHA 30% + BHA 2% Peeling Solution – a strong 10-minute exfoliating treatment for experienced users. Use it no more than twice a week, and skip it if your skin is sensitive.

Dry or dehydrated skin

Niacinamide 10% + Zinc 1% is the most popular choice for oily skin and visible pores. For clogged pores and breakouts, many people add Salicylic Acid 2% Solution. Introduce one at a time.
Alpha Arbutin 2% + HA is made for dark spots and uneven skin tone. Use it with daily sunscreen, as sun exposure makes dark spots worse.
The Ordinary advises against using Niacinamide in the same routine as direct Vitamin C (L-Ascorbic Acid). Use them at different times of day, for example Vitamin C in the morning and Niacinamide in the evening.
Start with gentle, single-purpose products such as Hyaluronic Acid 2% + B5 or Niacinamide 10% + Zinc 1%. Avoid strong exfoliants such as AHA 30% + BHA 2% until your skin is used to active ingredients, and patch-test anything new.
